VOLUNTEER
SERVICE
Volunteerism
is an inherent component of America's society, and hospice
provides a unique opportunity for an individual to contribute
to the comfort of the terminally ill and their families
The growth
of hospice within the past few years and the nature of the
hospice patient and family dictate the need for a large
group of active volunteers.
Hospice volunteers
give of their time and talents in a variety of ways.
 |
Providing
companionship, friendly visiting, listening to concerns
of the patient and family |
 |
Assisting
with errands (grocery shopping, prescriptions, supplies,
banking, etc) |
 |
Transporting
patient/family to appointments |
 |
Sitting
with patients to give caregivers some reprieve |
 |
Counseling office staff (special events, mailing, in-service
groups, etc...) |
A comprehensive
volunteer program is held twice a year, in the spring and
in the fall. It is important that the volunteer be acquainted
with the focus and philosophy of hospice care.
Following
training, a volunteer is placed in an assignment with which
he/she is comfortable. In addition, offering time and talents as a volunteer
means receiving much in return. It is a remarkable feeling
to know one has enriched another's life.
